Activity Description:

‘Save Our Water’ is going to be a club where we will be concerned about how the water is wasted in our school. We want to participate in helping the world by saving the water, and we want to start by our school. In our school the water that has not been drunk in the cafeteria is then thrown to the drain. So, instead of wasting the water that way, we want to recollect the water that has not been used, store it in a safe place, and then water the plants of the Organic Farm (another school group who takes care of growing plants) to not waste any water. This is going to be done in pairs, throughout the whole two years. Each week a new pair will be in charge of recollecting the water and storing it in the safe place to then on Friday water the plants in the organic farm. Then, we want to take this beyond, and we want to make fundraising events to recollect money that we can send to a charity called Charity:Water, that will help the people in need sending them resources to have water. We would do different fundraising events as bakesales, a Save Our Water marathon, and maybe even a fashion show, all fundraising events to gain money we can send. We would also like to make some awareness days, in which the members of the group, and all the possible students in our school come dresses in a blue t-shirt, to make people aware of the importance of the water in our lives.

 

Personal goals: 

I hope to make people aware of how important it is to save water and save enough water in our school to 

make a change in our world, and to recollect sufficient money that will help those in need have the luxury 

of water every day.

 

What I am doing will accomplish my objectives, because by recollecting the water wasted in the cafeteria 

and watering the plants of the organic farm, will make a little change that can affect the world. It will save 

water in our school, which is just the beginning. This will make people aware of the importance of water. 

And by doing fundraising events we will gain enough money to help people in need have water. 

 

When I see students in our school help with the day to day water recollection, and are aware of the water 

importance I will have achieved some one of my goals. I will have achieved another of my goals but 

seeing how the organic farm flourishes with just our water being used and will also achieve my last goal 

when the company accepts our money as being sufficient and effective.

 

Learning Outomes:

1. I will increase my areas of strength and areas of growth when dealing with the world problems.

2. I will undertake a new challenge by carrying out an activity that is innovative as it has never be done in 

the school.

3. This is a planned and initiative activity by the members of the group: Isabel Ruiz, Miren Lopez, Naroa 

Quintana, and me, Sarah de la Mata.

4. I will collaborate with the members of my group (the original ones and the ones who will join) by 

choosing the activities that should be carried out. I will also work with the partner assigned when 

recollecting the water in the cafeteria. And we will work collaboratively with the Organic Farm. 

5. I will show perseverance as I will not give up in the activities carried out, I will continue with this activity 

until the two years have passes, even if we have enough money recollected.

6. it is engaged with issues of global importance as it deals with the water problems in our world.

Reflections: 

 

8/10/14:

We started the club and today we had our first meeting. I went around telling the people at our school about the club and we currently have 14 members. The leaders of the club are Naroa, Isabel, Miren and I. We have organized the 14 members into the following pairs, so we can start next week recollecting the water left after every lunch. Each pair will do this for a week:

Each leader of the group has a specific role:

 

Sarah-  secretary, who will take care of planning dates for the events and will assign a week to each pair, and will keep record of the water wastage each month:

 

Isabel - Marketing specialist, who will take care of the campaign, by publicizing the club

 

Miren - takes care of contacting with the Organic Farm, and will make sure the water is delivered here:

 

Naroa - managing the money and give it to the charity:

 

All of us will take care of collecting water after lunch, like the rest of the members. 

 

It was a bit stressful because it was the first time we had to organize a club but I felt really excited because we are going to do something benefitial to the school. I hope it all goes great!!

 

1st week watering plants:

This is the first week we start collecting water after lunch and it gave me an enormous shock!! About 20L of water were left over everyday! This is insane, because Ihad no idea so much water was being wasted every day. This water then goes directly into the drain. So, thank god we have started this club because we are going to save so much water in our school. This will reduce the water needed to water the plants, and be useful. 21/11/2014

Today the leaders of Save our water had another meeting after school. We feel that watering the plants everyday is too much, taking into consideration that we live in a very rainy area. So, we decided that the best hing was to water the plants twice a week, and mondays and fridays use it to water the organic farm, which the 12th graders are working on. On wednesdays, we decided to ask the cleaning ladies to use the water for cleaning the classes, as it is clean water.

We bought two cubes which will serve to store the water to use in the organic farm. 

We discussed fundraising ideas to give money to charity:water. Some of our ideas included:

- bake sale

- car wash (though I am not too sure about this one, as it requires a large amount of water...)

- pizza party

- marathon

 

I am excited about these ideas so I hope the rest of the school collaborates to make them a success.

 

We are also thinking about having a water dispenser in the school lunch room, instead of serving larg amount of water in jars. This way people will get the water they need and no more.

Save our water isn't functioning as well as I expected. In Bilbao it rains a lot, so watering the plants is no longer productive, and it wastes even more water. Therefore, at the moment we are thinking how to develop our fundraising ideas to earn money to donate to the charity. I hope this goes well and we don't encounter any other problems.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

SAVE OUR WATER FINISHED

Unfortunately, we have not been able to carry the club efficiently. The objective of the club was to save the water from the school and use it to water plants, but is hasn't been effective. We never carried out the fundraiding activities, so we didn't earn any money to send to a charity making the club have no sense at all. However, we have accomplished one thing, which is that people now know how much water is wasted at school, so they will be more careful when getting water at school and their home.
